Jesus Calms the Storm

The He got into the boat and His disciples followed Him. Without warning a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this. Even the winds and waves obey Him!”

Matthew 8:23-2

Storms always seem to come “without warning.” You think you’ve got it under control…you pretend you are letting God control, but really you feel pretty confident. Confidence is not faith. When real storms arrive, your life rocks like a ship in The Deadliest Catch. Mast tipping and slapping the waves, icy water rushing away your profit and livelihood…all that protects you is yellow Gortex and a rope tied to the boat.

“Jesus, why do you sleep through this?”

Why did He sleep? He is always there when needed. Perhaps He knew the men didn’t really need help from the waves. The waves were not the real danger. What if they drowned? What if they were swept away? What if this storm in your life overtakes you? You are saved for an eternity with him no matter what your demise.

The real battle is Faith.

Do you have the faith to hold on to the rope, to know all storms end, to anticipate the pink and dawning skies?

Oh, you of little faith…

The real storm they faced was with faith is Jesus. He calmed the Storm, not because they needed safety, but because they needed to know Who protects them…

Who is in charge

Who has All the Power

If He calms your storm, it will be not to save you, but to Prove Who He Is.

Tomorrow, don’t celebrate an 8 lb. 6 oz. Baby Jesus. Remember, you don’t even know, can’t even image, no matter how many miracles you see, “What kind of man is this?”

This is no Man. This is no mere babe. This is the First, the Last, the Living One, our Warrior God, Redeemeer, Friend, Teacher, Banner, Healer, Savior.

Savior.

Not from storms…but from ourselves. Jesus, save us from the voice that tells us “we can do it if only….” Hear The Spirit say, “He can do it….Only.”

Faith.
